Obviously the following applies all year long, but as Summer comes around and kids have more unsupervised free time on their hands, PLEASE make sure your guns and ammo are locked up safely and securely. Check on your weapons and ammo regularly to make sure they are not missing. And TALK to your children about gun safety, demystify guns and teach them to be safe around them. These are the best ways to keep your child safe in a gun laden world.
If you can afford it, keep your firearms in a large-ish gun safe, or a small one bolted to the wall, that children cannot move or take away to try and open elsewhere. These small gun safes and cables shown below are great short term deterrents and, if kept hidden away and checked on daily, are probably sufficient. But if a child can take them away for a few days at a time with no one noticing, odds are, they will be opened.
Guns are working tools and recreational tools, but they are not TOYS. Knowledge and a lack of access are the best gifts we can give our children and loved ones when it comes to them being in the house.
